EXTRAODRINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION
The Eucharist is ‘the source and summit’ of the Christian life. The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. – CCC 1324
St. Leo the Great Parish is a community that derives strength and nourishment from Holy Communion. As the Eucharist truly is the body, blood, soul and divinity of our Lord, it is only with great reverence and awe that some within the community assist our priests and deacons to distribute this sacred gift.
As part of their ministry, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC) receive training and a special commission from the diocesan Bishop to offer this great service (R.S. par. 155). The EMHC would assist the priest during the Sunday Liturgy that he or she normally attends.
Who may become an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion?
The lay Christian faithful called to give assistance at liturgical celebrations should be well instructed and must be those whose Christian life, morals and fidelity to the Church’s Magisterium recommend them. It is fitting that such a one should have received a liturgical formation in accordance with his or her age, condition, state of life, and religious culture. No one should be selected whose designation could cause consternation for the faithful. – R.S. par. 46
If you believe that the Holy Eucharist is Jesus; you are a person of great prayer; you are a practicing and committed Catholic; and you are in no way intentionally living a life publicly or privately contrary to the Gospel of our Lord then perhaps this ministry is for you.
