MINISTRY OF HOSPITALITY
What is this ministry about?
As every Catholic Church is a true house of God, the place where Jesus dwells in the Eucharist, we do our best to welcome all who come here. In a particular way, it is the role of the ministers of hospitality to greet parishioners, assist with seating, take up the collection, handout bulletins and other pertinent information after mass, and finally to seek out new faces in the community. The list is long but the reward is great as we see the fruits of our work from one week to the next.
Greeters
Greeters are usually the first people a visitor or parishioner would see upon entering the Church. They welcome the People of God with a smile, a friendly word, or by holding a door. At the end of mass, greeters and ushers work together to hand out the bulletin as they wish the People of God blessings and farewell until they next meet.
Ushers
It is the role of the usher to help parishioners and especially visitors to find seating. As the mass begins there will undoubtedly be some late arrivals who need assistance finding their seats quickly and quietly; the usher provides that assistance. The ushers also take up the collection and facilitate the presentation of the gifts, usually by asking those within the community to carry a ciborium, cruet or some other sacred item towards the sanctuary. If needed, ushers also assist the greeters as they hand out bulletins at the end of mass.
Who should get involved?
If you are willing to smile, offer a much needed hand, and would like to see our parish community grow in friendship perhaps this ministry is for you!
How much time is involved?
Since the ministers of hospitalitywork on a rotational basis, the frequency with which one might partake in the ministry depends on how many members are active at any given time. It will also be necessary to make room in your schedule for instructional sessions when they arise, although this is quite infrequent.
